THE MAZE RUNNER

T H E  M A Z E  R U N N E R was released in 2014 and is based on the novel by James Dashner. As you know from my previous post on Teen Wolf, I was going to be doing a post about The Maze Runner. I have been waiting to do it for a while! So here it is!! You all know how I came across The Maze Runner (Nash Grier mentioned it in one of his vids) and I saw another article that asked questions about some things in the film, so I decided to answer them... There aren't many questions so I'll give you a little bit of info before I start.

  • Director: Wes Ball
  • Stars: Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Thomas Brodie-Sangster
  • Release Date: September 2014
Once again I have only put 4 people who star in it because we'll be here forever reading through the cast list. However if you want to here's IMDb

So...

The questions that people may not understand. In these answers I will be referring to the book and I think if you are a little confused, I recommend reading the books.

How did Gally follow Thomas and the others after they left the Maze?

When I watched the film I didn't even wonder how Gally got there, I just assumed it was by magic.......
OR that he followed Thomas in there to try and get them back but once reading the book I understand.

A griever
A N S W E R : What the film missed out was that at night, which the doors where close to closing anyway when Thomas and the others left, Grievers (creatures that roam the maze at night) came into the Glade and took him into the maze. Where Gally obviously fought to survive.

Gally played by Will Poulter and his amazing eyebrows

Why did he want to kill Thomas all though they had escaped?

I cried a lot in the scene... I still cry when I watch it now although I've watched it over (way over) 50 times...

A N S W E R : In the 3rd book you are told by Gally (SPOILER yes he's alive) the reason as to why he tried to kill Thomas but killed Chuck. Chuck jumped in front of Thomas. But its not all it seems. The group thinks he had been stung by a Griever, however he was not. It was, of course, W.C.K.D. They are able to control them, but you only find this out in the 3rd book! He was forced to say and do all of those things. If you think that was wicked (see what I did there) the also controlled Chuck to make him jump in front of Thomas. Personally I believe they did this to drive Thomas and the group. To give meaning as to why they want to leave.

If W.C.K.D is meant to be good, then why make it sound like 'wicked'?

In the second film you understand what the name means 'World Catastrophe Killzone Department'.

A N S W E R : In the book the real name is W.I.C.K.E.D. Which stands for 'World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department'.
I think they changed it in the films for a reason. It would make it too obvious what they were doing when they were told the real name of W.C.K.D. They can't really help what there abbreviation of the name sounds like but there is again meaning to it. James Dashner defiantly meant it (obviously). I also think that one of the reasons behind it is so you trust them even less, even in the first film.

Why didn't the helicopter rescue the boys from inside the Glade?
(Some of) The Glade

The Glade is where all the boys live and the maze surrounds it.

A N S W E R : The helicopter didn't land in the maze as it would defeat the object of the test or phase 1 as Ava Paige calls it. There are lots of dead bodies where they are supposed to be controlling the maze and that was also part of the plan, which is to make them believe that they are safe.

They possibly had something else to monitor them to see when to send the people in to 'save' them. As they needed everything to work out properly, according to the plan.

Why did Thomas and Minho try to save Alby if he was already stung?

That was a gripping moment when Thomas ran in the maze. But this whole scene is different to the book and the whole concept of getting stung.

A N S W E R : In the book they already have the serum, which doesn't cure the flare, it cures whats in the Grievers sting. Which is similar but not the same (I would imagine). And also most of the Gladers are immune to the Flare which is why they are apart of the experiment. In the book they have to get Alby back to the Medjacks (doctors of the Glade if you like) so they can give him the serum. They know it works as Gally has gone through the Changing (which is what they call it when you've been stung, you get some of your memories back), also explaining why hes so cranky all the time.
Kaya, Will and Dylan

In the film however, that's really up to you to decide. I like to believe its apart of Thomas' personality. He can't just stand around and watch someone get trapped in the maze, so he has to do SOMETHING to try and prevent it. Also its not just Alby in the maze its Minho. Minho has just spent all day running through the maze and now he will have to run all night to try and survive, which isn't likely as no one has ever survived a night in the maze. He wants to help Minho too.
The Maze Runner cast dancing as per usual

Thanks for reading! See you soon!
